About Louisville, KY

The city of Louisville is located at the Falls of the Ohio, a cascading waterfall and the only natural obstacle on the Ohio River. The city is very close to the Kentucky-Indiana border, and, because the metropolitan area of the city envelops some Indiana counties, the area around Louisville is often referred to as Kentuckiana. The unique geographical position of the city makes it difficult to identify: some would say that it is a midwestern city, whereas others would argue that it is a Southern city by culture.

George Rogers Clark founded Louisville in 1778. The city is named after King Louis XVI of France. The land that the city was founded on was mostly swampland that had to be drained as the city grew out from its original boundaries. A large majority of the city is still located on a flood plain.

The economy of the city of Louisville initially was centered around the shipping and cargo industry, based on its access to the highly navigable Ohio River and its prime location as a distribution hub. The economic focus in Louisville has shifted as of late, however, and now there is an emphasis on the healthcare industry as well as research and development for the medical sciences.

Louisville is home to many famous historical figures, such as Thomas Edison and Muhammad Ali, and it hosts the famed Kentucky Derby, which is one of the most celebrated horse races in the world.  

Some of the neighborhoods in Louisville include: the Bardstown Road corridor, Frankfort Avenue, and Old Louisville. Surrounding cities and towns include: New Albany, St Dennis, Oak Park, Lyndon, Buechel, Newburg, Middletown, Douglass Hills, Jeffersontown.
