About High School Biology
The subject of biology is one of the most prominent subjects in the department of natural sciences. It developed in the 19th century as a result of scientists coming to realize that living organisms share fundamental properties. Today, nearly one million papers are published annually on the subject of biology. Essentially, biology is the study of living organisms and how they manage to interact with their environment. From single-celled organisms to the human body, biology examines the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of what comprises living things. The classification of organisms is also a part of the field of Biology as well. In general, there are four distinct areas of biology that must be studied and mastered in order to work in this field: cell theory, evolutionary theory, genetics, and homeostasis.
Within the study of biology, there are several subfields, including microbiology, zoology, botany, molecular biology, biochemistry, and cellular biology. Typically, all of these subjects are covered in the curriculum in high school. In fact, Biology is one of the first intensive scientific subjects that students study at the high school level, and later subjects, such as chemistry and physics, often return back to the fundamentals of what is initially learned in biology.
