The Portuguese language is one of the oldest languages in Europe. It was developed about 2,000 years ago and is directly descended from Latin. It is one of the Romance languages and is closely associated with Spanish, French, Italian, and Romanian. Because the language was first developed in the Spanish region of Galicia, it closely resembles Spanish, and speakers of both languages have a basic mutual intelligence. When the Portuguese began to explore and colonize the world, the language began to spread worldwide as well.
