About Skiing
Skiing is one of the most popular winter sports in the world today. It is also one of the most popular spectator sports featured in the winter Olympics. There are many forms of skiing that are performed either as a leisure sport or competitively, such as cross-country, downhill, mogul, slalom, freestyle, or ski jump. All of these ski sports involve very different skills – some of them require a great deal of balance and agility, such as downhill skiing, whereas others require a great deal of stamina, such as in cross-country skiing. All of these sports, however, share one thing in common: they use two parallel skis affixed to the feet, connected by special ski boots. Also, most ski sports (with the exception of the ski jump) feature ski poles in each hand, which help the skier to steer and stop.
Because of the extreme speeds that skiers reach while barreling headfirst down a snowy mountainside, a great deal of skill and training is required. As a result, working one-on-one with a skiing tutor can be a tremendous advantage.
