About Drums
The term “drums” usually refers to the modern drum set. A drum set, also sometimes referred to as a “drum kit” or “trap set,” is a collection of drums that are assembled ergonomically so that a drummer can maximize the use of all four limbs in order to create complex, dynamic rhythms, known by musicians as “drum beats. While drumming has existed since the dawn of mankind, the assembly of the drum set as it is known today is quite unusual to other drumming cultures. The center of a drum set is known as the “bass drum,” which sits on its side and projects outward. The bass drum is played by way of a mallet mounted on a sensitive foot pedal and can come in a variety of different sizes and dimensions in order to meet the sonic needs of the drummer. Some drum sets even feature two bass drums. The other unusual feature of the drum set is the “hi hat,” a set of two opposing cymbals mounted on a metal rod that can be closed together by the drummer by way of a foot pedal. As a result, the hi hat can be played by clasping the cymbals together rhythmically, or by being struck with drumsticks. The final critical component of a drum set is a snare drum, which is taken from the marching snare drum concept found in marching bands.
The remainder of a drum set includes a collection of tom tom drums, cymbals, and extraneous percussion, all of which express the needs and artistic vision of the drummer. As a result, drum sets can be very spare in their design, or they can include a great number of drums and other percussion pieces. Drums can also be played with a variety of methods, using sticks, brushes, mallets, and even hands in some rare instances. Because of the versatility of the drum set, it is used in a variety of music styles, including jazz, rock, blues, heavy metal, country, folk, and modern art music. In order to master the elements of drumming, working one-on=one with a drums tutor is highly recommended.
