what is the difference between merci vs merci beaucoup

I hear different ways of saying thank you. Which one is the more formal one?

I am pretty sure both terms are equivalent. You can say both: Merci, merci beaucoup and sometimes you can also hear mercie bien. Hope this helps.
I think merci is used in France while merci beaucoup in Canada? Not sure.
Not sure if there is a difference
