When is it a good time for a toddler to start learning how to read

My daughter is 5 and starts to get interested in letters. She tries to combine the letters to be able to read, but she can't obviously read. What is a good method to teach her reading?

I have found several excellent books on Amazon.com as well as in my local library that teach children your daughter's age. i don't think five years old is too young if she shows an interest.
