What is the origin of the word "democrat"?

2weeks before the elections I am still wondering whom to choose. Perhaps the definition of this word may give me a better clue. Why should I vote for Romney?

Ibelieve it means liberalisim and that is the oppisite of conservative. You are more relaxed on your descions because there is no set standard which can be either good or bad depending on the outcome.

That descision is up to you as to who you vote for and for no one else to tell you. I will say this that in listening to the debates that went on, Romney seemed to be at peace, and answered every question asked of him, he seems to be honest and with integerity, look at how he did as govener and then ask yourself this question, do you want the same for your country or do you want 4 more years of the same from Obama? We need someone smart and knows how to budget the balance and get the united states back to working. I hope this was a help.

The word "Democrat" comes from the Greek. "Demos" meant 'population', and "Kratos" which meant 'kingdom'. In other words, at it's origins, 'democrat' means 'a member of the population'. I hope this helps in your election choice!

Demos can be traced back to Ancient Greece. The word, demos, referred to the people, citizens, common people, etc. Today, demos can be recognized as a root in words, such as demography (the study of people) and demagogue (a person whose power lies in exciting the people).

The origin of the word comes from Greek language. The prefix 'demos' refers to people or population. The suffix 'cracy' means governing body. The literal translation is goverment of the people. In a democracy, as opposed to other forms of government, the everyday people are the controllers of society

A democracy is basically a system of government where the majority rule. A representative government is where you have representatives elected to protect your individual rights - even if you are not in the majority. Laws cannot be passed by the majority if it infringes on other people's rights. No mob rule!
