When working with a student, I guide her through the problem by asking a series of questions. If I see that she is a little weak in a topic like factoring, I might spend 1-2 minutes reviewing that area. When there is a new formula or unfamiliar topic, I help her find the answer in her textbook or notes instead of giving her the answer directly. I also emphasize understanding over memorization and give frequent examples to help reinforce basic concepts.
