Special Needs: ?
I studied human biology at Brown University, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors, as a Phi Beta Kappa honoree. I love science, and--as a tutor--I would draw on considerable experience as a student and teacher of biology, chemistry, and physics. My own studies have given me insight into effective learning strategies. For instance, I’ve seen how crucial it is to understand the basic, foundational concepts in a given subject before moving on to details and exceptions.
I also enjoy English and history. In my senior year of high school, I won the creative and expository writing prizes in my class of around 300 students. I wrote my senior thesis in medical anthropology, on the genesis of HIV/AIDS stigma in Kwazulu-Natal South Africa. I enjoy working with students to improve the organization, clarity, and depth of thought in their writing.
I love to teach. I have been tutoring since I was in high school, when I worked with elementary school students on math and reading. In college, I tutored my peers in Cell and Molecular Biology, and I tutored students in a Providence high school in math, physics, and writing.
Having recently prepared for the MCAT, I feel particularly equipped to help students succeed on this exam. My first MCAT practice test was a frustrating and daunting experience: I ran out of time on every section; I scored a 15—that’s in the 7th percentile! However, after planning and executing an effective study plan, I raised my score to a 37 (in the 97th percentile). By creating a personalized study-plan, I can help students make this kind of improvement. With the right sort of preparation, there is no reason to dread the MCAT. We will treat the MCAT as an opportunity for intellectual growth rather than a mere obstacle in the medical school application process.
