I started teaching at the University of Minnesota as a graduate assistant. It never would have occurred to me that I would have been good at teaching, much less have liked it. But I have loved teaching since the first day I walked in the door, and it has been the most gratifying job I've ever had in my life. I have a B.A. in English from Iowa State University and a M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the Univeristy of Minnesota. I have tutored children (K-3) in reading and creative writing (where I created my own curriculum for youth writers), proofread for the Minneapolis Star Tribune and The Employment News, and became a freelance editor for people writing books and needing help with graduate theses and other college papers. I also taught five classes in the English Department at the University of Minnesota : Intro to Creative Writing, Freshman Composition, English Literature, Intro to Poetry Writing, and Intermediate Nonfiction Writing.

My approach to tutoring is to prioritize what a particular student's needs are. For example, say a student needs help with English Literature, organization, writing papers, and study skills I would help that student first with organization and study skills. You cannot write papers or study literature without organization or study skills. If they had papers and other homework due imminently, I would work with that student simultaneously on organization and study skills, and perhaps met them at the library, to help the student research appropriately.
