Special Needs: ?
I've taught writing at the university level since 1969. This includes Freshman English and more advanced courses as well, in both in expository and technical writing. I've also worked in the non-profit world and in government, writing everything from memoranda and policy statements to press releases and grant applications. I've edited or ghost written a couple of novels.
As Far as tutoring in literature is concerned, my field is English literature, though I know American Literature as well. My doctoral dissertation was a modern-spelling edition of some sixteenth-century plays. My "minor" was ancient and medieval astronomy.
In my work as a teacher, editor, and project manager in the arts, I've worked with many writers--authors, jourlanists, artists, musicians, business executives, engineers--to help them improve their written work and their writing skills. My main aim is to help writers find out what they have to say, and say it in the most effective way.
There are many reasons why people with good ideas have trouble getting them down on paper. (Grammer is usualy the least of the problems.) There really is a "writing process," and it can be learned. Anyone can become a competent writer by mastering a few basic strategies. In a one-on-one situation, these skills can be learned quickly and (usually) painlessly, unlike the situation in many university writing courses.
As a look at my resume will show, I bring to my students not only first class academic training but also wide experience writing in the real world.
