Hi, I'm a medical student currently on leave. I have 4 years experience working in a pre-school setting and 1 working with college students - both as a teacher's assistant. A lot of my experience comes from tutoring friends and family (eg 5 nieces and nephews live with us and I tutored them extensively throughout their educations; 2 of them, one of which struggles with learning disabilities, are still in grade school).
I wholeheartedly value the fact that we all have very different learning styles. Mine has always been very different from others. As a child, I was forced to learn the way everyone else learned and, thus, encountered many obstacles. As an older student, I became more aware of this difference and was finally able to have my study skills match my learning style. I thrived from that point forward and have since tried to 'spread the word' about my 'discovery'. So...
My goal for any tutoring session is comfort and confidence - things I struggled with during my studies. At first, I work with students to figure out what their learning style is and what study skills work best for them. As soon as they become comfortable with how they learn and what skills are best, they will slowly begin to feel comfortable with themselves as learners.
As a medical student, it's not enough to simply remember. We must also be able to recall thoroughly and efficiently. As a result, I've been slowly incorporating skills and techniques that help with this into my tutoring sessions. This particular ability truly helped boost my confidence.
Some other statistics about myself: I had a 3.8 GPA for my post-baccalaureate studies at SFSU; I scored within the 80-85th percentile on my SATs and within the 90th percentile on my MCAT.
PLEASE NOTE: My formal experience is limited to the above-mentioned. I have no specific credentials in teaching or learning skills. After all my years as a student, I simply developed a passion for learning.
