About High School History
The subject of history is one of the oldest and most central subjects taught in schools throughout the world. The focus on history at the high school-level is usually quite expansive and concentrated on for all four years of the curriculum. The study of history is the study of the written record and scientific and archaeological discoveries of the past, particularly as it pertains to the human race. History has been written about even since the ancient times, when written record and oral tradition was all that early historians could rely upon. Today, history continues to evolve based on the work of previous historians as well as new means of preserving historical fact, such as photography, sound recording, and motion pictures. In high school, each semester is usually devoted to one specific period or culture.
Because history is extremely wide-ranging, covering all geographical areas of the world as well as every period of human existence, there are many subdivisions to the study of history. In addition, history is no longer studied in the abstract: now the subject of history is often interlocked with other scholarly subjects, such as religious studies, philosophy, literature, sociology, anthropology, archaeology, political science, and musicology. Within the discipline of history, students must also learn concepts such as historiography, social history, literary history, period history, gender history, people’s history, and geography, all of which are introduced at the high school level. Because history is so far-reaching, many students find it advantageous to work one-on-one with a history tutor.
