The name “Salem” was introduced early on by European settlers, however the original name for the area that the city was built upon was known as “Chemeketa,” after the Native American tribes that first inhabited the land. The area of Salem was inhabited by Native Americans for over 5,000 years, and many of the European settlers felt that the name of the land should remain as “Chemeketa.”
