Located at the confluence of three major rivers, the Allegheny, the Ohio, and the Monongahela, Pittsburgh’s environment has suffered over the years from its reliance upon crude industry and manufacturing. In recent years, however, the city has made tremendous strides to reduce pollution levels in and around the city, and was even voted as “America’s Most Liveable City” based on its affordable housing, job opportunities, educational system, low crime rate, and cultural activities. Pittsburgh has also dramatically shifted its economic focus, moving away from steel manufacturing and into sectors such as healthcare, education, technology, and financial services. The city is also home to several highly successful sports franchises, such as the Steelers football team, the Penguins ice hockey club, and the Pirates baseball team, all of whose uniforms bear the black and gold colors of the city flag as well.
