The art of sewing is an ancient art that dates back to the Paleolithic period, or 30,000 BC. It is an art that grew directly out of the evolution of mankind and its need to protect itself from nature and the elements. 30,000 years of the sewing tradition has led it to become one of the highest and most popular forms of art in the world today. Since the Renaissance, fashion and sewing have been inextricably linked as art-forms, with fashion designers bringing together a wealth of different sewing materials, such as fur, leather, cloth, and wool with various colors and textures in order to create powerful artistic statements in fashion.

All of this being said, the act of sewing is in fact a very basic and simple art – it is literally the use of a needle and thread in order to fasten pieces of material together. While hand sewing still remains a necessary ability for semesters and seamstresses, the sewing machine has greatly enhanced the speed and accuracy of sewing in the modern era, allowing for even complex and intricate articles of clothing to be better-made and mass-produced.
