About New Orleans, LA
While perhaps not the largest or most influential city in the United States, the city of New Orleans is no doubt one of the nation’s most unique as well as one of the most world-famous cities. Founded in 1718 by the French Mississippi Company and populated early on by Franco-Arcadian settlers who migrated from the Province of Quebec in Canada, New Orleans stands as the capital of Louisiana, the most French-influenced state in the Union. Its French culture, combined with African and Creole customs, has blended over its long history to create a city culture unrivalled by any other in the world.
New Orleans is famous for many things. Its celebration of Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday” as it is translated, is taken from a common Roman Catholic tradition celebrated throughout the world where worshippers celebrate abundantly before the beginning of the holy season of Lent, which is marked by fasting and abstinence. The celebration of Mardi Gras encapsulates all of what the city of New Orleans is famous for: it highlights the city’s “Dixieland” music, which is perhaps the most primordial form of what it now known as “Jazz,” its spicy, flavourful Creole cuisine, and its reputation for partying and nightlife.
The city itself is located on the muddy Mississippi river and has been home to one of the busiest seaports in America. It is also in close proximity to Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Borgne, and the Gulf of Mexico. These three significant bodies of water contributed to the near-destruction of the city in August of 2005 when Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city and decimated its population, driving many of its inhabitants to leave the city and relocate to more inland communities. The culture and identity of New Orleans, however, is undying, and the core of its residents is working diligently to rebuild the city and return it to its greatness. In recent years, many national developers have bought up abandoned land in the city’s limits and are planning large-scale development of commercial, industrial, and residential projects, which will eventually help to bolster the city’s struggling economy.
The neighborhoods of New Orleans are known as “wards,” and include: the famous French Quarter, Central City, Uptown, Mid-City, Lakeview Area, Gentilly, and Bywater among others. About Middle School Gifted
Gifted students are defined as children whose academic and intellectual abilities are enhanced beyond their own physical years. While giftedness is often seen as a tremendous advantage, many students also struggle to apply their giftedness to regular-level classes and tracks at the middle school level. In addition, many gifted students also find regular curricula to be unchallenging and facile. As a result, many middle schools offer Gifted Education or Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) for students who are classified as gifted. There is a very specific set of pedagogical theories and practices associated with gifted education, designed to help gifted students maximize their potential using their academic and intellectual gifts. Not all gifted students are gifted in the same areas: whereas some students show a proficiency for math and science, other gifted students show an amazing ability is writing, reading comprehension, and the arts.
Regardless of the particular type of gift, the GATE programs offered at middle school often give gifted students an opportunity to fully realize their talents. However, one of the best ways to truly maximize a gifted student’s gift is to have them work one-on-one with a gifted education tutors.
