About Lincoln, NE
Lincoln is the capital and second largest city in the state of Nebraska, with the largest being Omaha. Lincoln was established in 1856 as the village of Lancaster, and later assumed the role of state capital after the Nebraska legislature sought to move the capital as far away from Kansas as possible, so as to avoid annexation issues. There was considerable controversy of the renaming of the city as Lincoln after President Abraham Lincoln, since many of the citizens of Nebraska were Confederate sympathizers.
Because of the Nebraska legislature’s purposeful decision to locate the state capital in an area that would be protected from annexing rights, the city of Lincoln is oddly placed for a capital; it doesn’t sit on the Platte or Missouri Rivers, as all other large cities in Nebraska do. Instead, the city is located near Salt Creek, a region of saline wetlands and swamps. Although the city has continued to grow and expand, the region around the city has remained largely rural, with very few suburban regions.
While the administration of the Nebraska government is the prominent function of the city, it also boasts a healthy, Midwestern-style economic identity. Sectors such as the service industries, banking, information technology, insurance, and rail and truck transport are all well represented among prominent companies within the city. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is also a prominent employer.
