About Las Vegas, NV
It’s ironic that the Spanish word Las Vegas is translated into English as “The Meadows,” since there is nothing about the dry, hot, arid climate and landscape of the city that would suggest the fruitful, lush image of floral meadows. And yet, the splendor and mystique of Las Vegas does seem to grow like a tropical oasis out of an otherwise barren wasteland, its neon lights and towering, flamboyant casinos and resorts lighting up a mesmerizing skyline in the midst of the vacant Mojave Desert. In spite of its rural location, the city of Las Vegas is by far the populous city in the state of Nevada.
Founded originally in the early 1900s, it began as a modest stopover for pioneers and adventurers to the fertile west. With the boom of the gold rush and the mining industry, it further developed into a staging area for this new industry. But it was the development of its unmatched entertainment industry that put Las Vegas on the map, and it is now the fastest-growing city established in the U.S. in the 20th century, much like how Chicago was the fastest-growing city of the 19th century.
Las Vegas is now billed as the entertainment capital of the world, with its myriad of casinos, resort hotels, and the famous Vegas Strip attracting millions of visitors each year. It is home to some of the largest, most frequented casinos in the world, and its landscape and skyline now serves as a popular backdrop for films and television programs. With the popularity of poker as a television sport, Las Vegas has become particularly popular. Because of the city’s affordable real estate, it continues to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. and, even though a large majority of the city’s inhabitants work in the gaming and entertainment industry, the city is beginning to grow as a commercial city as well.
There are few established towns and cities outside of Las Vegas. For the most part, it truly is a city built in the middle of a desert. Some of the surrounding towns include: Spring Valley, Henderson, Enterprise, Paradise, Boulder City, Callville Bay, Sloan, Blue Diamond, and Mountain Springs. About Astronomy
The study of astronomy is one of the oldest scientific subjects concerned with celestial objects that exist outside of the earth’s atmosphere. This includes stars, planets, comets, galaxies, and asteroids. The study of astronomy is also a theoretical science as well, and it studies the physics, chemistry, motion, and meteorology of celestial objects as well. The astronomer is able to do this using a variety of techniques, most of which are facilitated by the use of the telescope. Therefore, astronomy is now divided into two fields of study, theoretical and observational astronomy. Observational astronomy involves subfields such as astrometry, constellations, and celestial navigation, and, in ancient times it also concerned the making of calendars and even astrology. Theoretical astronomy, however, is chiefly concerned with the study of astrophysics and lexicology. Although most celestial objects are quite far away, astrophysics is able to determine the make-up and age of stars, planets, and other celestial objects. By gaining this knowledge, they are able to piece together the history, creation, and function of the cosmos.
While astronomy is offered at most universities in the United States, hiring an astronomy tutor to help in learning and retaining knowledge can be a valuable asset.
