About Bass Guitar
The bass guitar is one of the most popular and widely used stringed instruments in the world today. While some early models of the electric bass guitar were developed in the 1930s, it wasn’t until the 1950s that the bass guitar began to be mass-produced and used. The electric bass guitar was a radical reinvention of the acoustic double bass: the instrument was condensed to the size of a guitar and played in an angled position with a guitar strap. The strings were amplified by way of electric magnetic pickups that sent the signal to a guitar amplifier and speaker. The neck was flattened considerably and guitar-like frets were added. These innovations, designed primarily by the Fender guitar company, radically differentiated the sound and tone of the bass guitar as compared to a double bass. While the double was known for its resonant, mellow sound, the electric guitar had the capability of projecting as loud as its amplifier would allow. The tone was adjustable and was cutting enough to be played along with drum sets, electric guitars, organs, pianos, and amplified voice.
Today, bass guitar retains all of these innovations, while introducing some newer features. While the original electric bass guitars had only 4 strings, bass guitars today now come in 5, 6 and even 7-string models. Some models also come fretless, giving the bass guitar a jazzier, more double bass sound. Also, a variety of playing styles have developed over the years. While the early bass guitar was designed to be played with the thumb, now bassists use their fingers and hands in a variety of techniques. In addition, some of the most accomplished bass guitarists even play with a guitar pick as opposed to their fingers, further changing the tone of the instrument. As a result of these techniques, the electric guitar can be used in virtually any music style, such as country, blues, jazz, rock, metal, folk, and hip hop.
Those who wish to learn and master the electric bass guitar must learn a variety of techniques and fundamentals. The best way to learn these things is to work one-on-one with a bass guitar tutor.
