About Volleyball

The sport of volleyball is an exciting team sport that is featured prominently in the Olympics. While volleyball is a professional sport, it does not comprise a large spectator audience outside of the Olympics. However, it is an increasingly popular sport in high schools and colleges in the United States and Europe, and many people also choose to play volleyball as a club sport as well. Volleyball is played on a hardwood court, similar to that of a basketball court. Two teams of six players try to shoot a basketball-sized ball over a high net and ground it on the opponent’s side of the court. Because of the height of the net and strict rules that the net cannot be touched by players, volleyball requires great jumping skill as well as strength and technique to drive the ball with enough velocity in order to make it unplayable by the other team. Even more strength is needed to serve the ball, which is done from the far side of the court.

Finally, there is a certain touch that volleyball players must develop in playing the ball, since the ball cannot ever be played with a pushing gesture.
