With a population of 90,205 residents, the city of Gresham is the fourth largest city in the state of Oregon, based on population. The city gets its name from the famous Civil War general and the United States first postmaster general, Walter Quinton, Gresham. The city of Gresham is located immediately east of Portland, the state’s largest city by population, and it serves as an important suburb, residential community, and satellite city. Gresham’s city limits has a total area of 22.2 square miles, with 4,071.6 residents per square mile.

The city of Gresham had a difficult time becoming incorporated as a city. For a long time throughout the 19th century, the city was unofficially known as Campground, since it was a popular place for prospectors and pioneers to stop off on their trek westward. After the city had begun to grow, all it needed was a post office. A storeowner offered to use his store as a post office, and suggested that the city be named after postmaster general Gresham if granted. The city was officially incorporated as Gresham in 1905.
