About Basketball
Basketball is one of the most popular spectator sports in America today, and is fast becoming one of the most popular sports worldwide. The modern form of the game was said to be invented in 1891 in the U.S., and was admitted as an official Olympic sport in 1936. Since that time, the interest of the sport has grown in Europe, Asia, and South America, and today the rest of the world can compete with American basketball players. The game is played with five players on the court for each team at a time, with the objective of shooting the basketball into a round hoop that is set ten feet off the ground. Players may get the ball into the hoop either by shooting or dunking the ball, however moving with the ball requires dribbling. Basketball is also considered to be a contact sport, although defenders are not allowed to make serious physical contact with the ball handler.
As a result of these rules, basketball players must learn a great deal of techniques and fundamentals, such as shooting, dribbling, taking foul shots, shooting three point shots, and defending.
