The beautiful city of Escondido is one of the largest cities in San Diego County, California. The city’s name, “Escondido,” literally means “hidden” in Spanish, and comes from the fact that the city is situated in a shallow valley that is encircled by rocky hills that once kept the city hidden. The initial economy focused on growing muscal grapes, olives, walnuts, and avocados, with avocados becoming the most abundant crop coming out of Escondido by the 1960s.

Today, the city of Escondido has seen a diversification of its economy. In addition to agriculture, the city also boasts strong tourism, retail, services, light industry, and high tech sectors as well. These new sectors have transformed the city from a largely lower class economic community to a middle class one.
