About Elgin, IL
Located on the Fox River just 40 miles southwest of Chicago, the city of Elgin is the eighth largest city by population in the state of Illinois, with a population of 94,487 residents. The city of Elgin was established in April of 1835, named after a famous Scottish hymn, called “The Song of Elgin.” The city remained rather small and modest until the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad reached the town, linking it to Chicago and other Midwestern cities and towns. The railroads began to transform the city’s economy from an agricultural and dairy model to a more industrialized city, with the advent of a condensed milk factor, the Elgin Watch Company, and other manufacturing companies.
Today, the city of Elgin is one of the most rapidly growing cities in the state of Illinois. The city has seen a major population boom, and several major housing developments have been constructed in order to accommodate the influx of new people. The city is also home to a popular riverboat casino and hotel.
