When people think of great U.S. cities, New York and Los Angeles are typically the first two cities that come to mind. But between the continental expanses of these two cities, the Midwestern metropolis of Chicago stands as the true crossroads of America, linking the Northeast with the West. Known as “The Windy City,” Chicago is home to a great deal of cultural essential that define American culture: Blues music, great professional sports teams, amazing food, commercial and industrial savvy, and education. Regardless of wherever you reside, whether it be in one of the city’s four neighborhoods -- the Downtown, the North Side, the South Side, and the West Side -- or one of the outlying suburban towns, such as Joliet, Wheaton, Champaign, or Waukegan, you’ll most definitely feel the far-reaching influence that this great city possesses.

About Philosophy
The subject of philosophy is one of the oldest subjects within the humanities that are offered at the college level. Nearly every college and university in the western world offers philosophy courses in their liberal arts. Philosophy involves the study of fundamental problems that concern topics of humanity, including questions of knowledge, truth, existence, beauty, justice, language, and the mind. Ever since the dawn of human civilization, mankind has wrestled with these concepts, and ancient cultures developed the discussion and thought concerning these questions into the study of philosophy. Philosophy as it is known today dates back to the Graeco-Roman period in the 6th century B.C. This early form of philosophy embodied by famous philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates, not only processed existential questions, but they wrote about them as well. From this point on, the subject of philosophy has flourished in cultures all around the world. Philosophy quite often makes its way into the study of other humanities as well, such as the study of Literature, History, Religious Studies, and Linguistics.
Within the study of philosophy, there are several study fields that philosophy students must be well versed in. Some of them include: metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, political philosophy, aesthetics, logic, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of language. While these topics are usually covered in philosophy courses, many students find it helpful to work one-on-one with a philosophy tutor as well.
