About Latin
Latin is by far the most classical and revered language in the Occidental world. Although it is technically a dead language, its roots can be directly found in the Romance Languages, which include French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Catalan, as well as some other minor languages and dialects. It was the official language of the Roman Empire – all Roman citizens, regardless of their country of origin, were required to speak it. As a result, Rome propagated the Latin language all over the western world, so that it became synonymous with politics, business, arts, and culture. The language was used well past the history of the Roman Empire, and really only fell out of active use in the 17th century. Latin is divided into two varieties: Classical Latin, which is the Latin associated with science, scholarship, religion, and the arts, and Vulgar Latin, which is the common style of Latin that was spoken between people. Today, both of these Latin forms can be studied and learned. Often times, scholars in a wide variety of subjects find Latin to be a beneficial language to learn.
Latin uses the same basic alphabet as English, with only a few exceptions. Similar to other Romance languages, a student of Latin must learn vocabulary, grammar, syntax, word order, pronunciation, and expressions. In addition, Latin utilizes declension, a kind of conjugation for words that does not exist in English. All of these study areas of the language are indeed challenging, and a Latin language student can greatly benefit from the help of a Latin language tutor.
Whether you are a young child, a teenager, a university student, or a professional adult and are seeking help in Latin, our tutors can assist you. Our professional tutors have advanced degrees or extensive training in Latin and can tutor and help in subject areas such as vocabulary, declension, grammar, syntax, word order, pronunciation, and expressions.
