About Charlotte, NC
Most large cities in the U.S. have a nickname that aptly defines them. Charlotte, however, has two great nicknames. Its original nickname, the “Queen City,” comes from its namesake, Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, who became the queen consort of King George III a year before the city was founded. The second nickname, however, emerged during the American Revolution, when British General Cornwallis referred to the city as “a hornet’s nest of rebellion.” Soon after, Charlotte became known as “The Hornet’s Nest,” and the Hornet was even the mascot for the city’s professional basketball city for a time.
Since the colonial era, Charlotte has remained one of the most significant cities of the south, boasting a strong, economically charged commercial and industrial community, a well-established southern culture and tradition, and a beautiful cityscape. Most recently it was rated as “The Best Place to Live in America,” based on job opportunity, a low crime rate, and an affordable real estate market. But there are many other features to Charlotte that make it an attractive choice for urban life: its restaurants, clubs, bars, and nightlife make it an exciting option for the young professional.
Charlotte has also become a major financial center for the United States. Both Bank of America and Wachovia, two of the largest banks in America, are headquartered in this city and are responsible for a major percentage of the city’s employed populace. There are also many other major corporations, some of which are ranked in the Fortune 500.
The city of Charlotte has almost 200 neighborhoods that comprise the city limits, a staggering number, to be sure. Some of these neighborhoods include: The Arboretum, a neighborhood along Pineville-Matthews Road, Ballantyne, an upscale area, along the North Carolina/South Carolina border, Biddleville, located in western Charlotte along Beatties Ford Road, Cotswold, near the intersection of Randolph and Sharon Amity roads, Derita, located just north of I-85 along West Sugar Creek Road, Dilworth, located southwest of Uptown, and Eastland, which comprises a large portion of eastern Charlotte. Some of the outlying town around Charlotte include: Mount Holly, Mint Hill, Matthews, Lake Park, Monroe, Kannapolis, Gastonia, Belmont, York, Harrisburg, and Fort Mill.

About Sewing
The art of sewing is an ancient art that dates back to the Paleolithic period, or 30,000 BC. It is an art that grew directly out of the evolution of mankind and its need to protect itself from nature and the elements. 30,000 years of the sewing tradition has led it to become one of the highest and most popular forms of art in the world today. Since the Renaissance, fashion and sewing have been inextricably linked as art-forms, with fashion designers bringing together a wealth of different sewing materials, such as fur, leather, cloth, and wool with various colors and textures in order to create powerful artistic statements in fashion.
All of this being said, the act of sewing is in fact a very basic and simple art – it is literally the use of a needle and thread in order to fasten pieces of material together. While hand sewing still remains a necessary ability for semesters and seamstresses, the sewing machine has greatly enhanced the speed and accuracy of sewing in the modern era, allowing for even complex and intricate articles of clothing to be better-made and mass-produced. Within the realm sewing, there are many specific techniques, such as plain sewing, fancy sewing, shirring, smocking, embroidery, quilting, appliqué, canvas work, patchwork, and stitching, all of which can be taught and directed by sewing tutors, who are highly trained and experienced in the art of sewing.
