About Charlotte, NC
Most large cities in the U.S. have a nickname that aptly defines them. Charlotte, however, has two great nicknames. Its original nickname, the “Queen City,” comes from its namesake, Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, who became the queen consort of King George III a year before the city was founded. The second nickname, however, emerged during the American Revolution, when British General Cornwallis referred to the city as “a hornet’s nest of rebellion.” Soon after, Charlotte became known as “The Hornet’s Nest,” and the Hornet was even the mascot for the city’s professional basketball city for a time.
Since the colonial era, Charlotte has remained one of the most significant cities of the south, boasting a strong, economically charged commercial and industrial community, a well-established southern culture and tradition, and a beautiful cityscape. Most recently it was rated as “The Best Place to Live in America,” based on job opportunity, a low crime rate, and an affordable real estate market. But there are many other features to Charlotte that make it an attractive choice for urban life: its restaurants, clubs, bars, and nightlife make it an exciting option for the young professional.
Charlotte has also become a major financial center for the United States. Both Bank of America and Wachovia, two of the largest banks in America, are headquartered in this city and are responsible for a major percentage of the city’s employed populace. There are also many other major corporations, some of which are ranked in the Fortune 500.
The city of Charlotte has almost 200 neighborhoods that comprise the city limits, a staggering number, to be sure. Some of these neighborhoods include: The Arboretum, a neighborhood along Pineville-Matthews Road, Ballantyne, an upscale area, along the North Carolina/South Carolina border, Biddleville, located in western Charlotte along Beatties Ford Road, Cotswold, near the intersection of Randolph and Sharon Amity roads, Derita, located just north of I-85 along West Sugar Creek Road, Dilworth, located southwest of Uptown, and Eastland, which comprises a large portion of eastern Charlotte. Some of the outlying town around Charlotte include: Mount Holly, Mint Hill, Matthews, Lake Park, Monroe, Kannapolis, Gastonia, Belmont, York, Harrisburg, and Fort Mill.

About English
The subject of English in America encompasses both the study of English-language literature as well as English writing skills. Because both reading and writing skills are essential to literally every other subject taught in academia – including mathematics and the sciences – a great deal of time and resources are spent in high schools to ensure that students receive a comprehensive education in this subject. English writing courses usually involve writing concepts such as composition, organization, sentence structure, and research.
In the realm of studying literature, students at the high school level are typically exposed to a very wide range of Literature, ranging in time period, language, and culture. American literature is always studied, however British Literature is still far more focused-upon. The emphasis in high school Literature programs is to help students fully develop their reading comprehension skills and, at the very end of high school, students are introduced to literary theory and criticism, which is concentrated on much more heavily in college English courses. Although these topics are always offered in English departments at U.S. high school, it is a good idea for an English student to work one-on-one with an English tutor who can help them to grasp the important concepts of these topics, since poor reading and writing skills can significantly hurt a student’s performance in college.
