About Charlotte, NC
Most large cities in the U.S. have a nickname that aptly defines them. Charlotte, however, has two great nicknames. Its original nickname, the “Queen City,” comes from its namesake, Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, who became the queen consort of King George III a year before the city was founded. The second nickname, however, emerged during the American Revolution, when British General Cornwallis referred to the city as “a hornet’s nest of rebellion.” Soon after, Charlotte became known as “The Hornet’s Nest,” and the Hornet was even the mascot for the city’s professional basketball city for a time.
Since the colonial era, Charlotte has remained one of the most significant cities of the south, boasting a strong, economically charged commercial and industrial community, a well-established southern culture and tradition, and a beautiful cityscape. Most recently it was rated as “The Best Place to Live in America,” based on job opportunity, a low crime rate, and an affordable real estate market. But there are many other features to Charlotte that make it an attractive choice for urban life: its restaurants, clubs, bars, and nightlife make it an exciting option for the young professional.
Charlotte has also become a major financial center for the United States. Both Bank of America and Wachovia, two of the largest banks in America, are headquartered in this city and are responsible for a major percentage of the city’s employed populace. There are also many other major corporations, some of which are ranked in the Fortune 500.
The city of Charlotte has almost 200 neighborhoods that comprise the city limits, a staggering number, to be sure. Some of these neighborhoods include: The Arboretum, a neighborhood along Pineville-Matthews Road, Ballantyne, an upscale area, along the North Carolina/South Carolina border, Biddleville, located in western Charlotte along Beatties Ford Road, Cotswold, near the intersection of Randolph and Sharon Amity roads, Derita, located just north of I-85 along West Sugar Creek Road, Dilworth, located southwest of Uptown, and Eastland, which comprises a large portion of eastern Charlotte. Some of the outlying town around Charlotte include: Mount Holly, Mint Hill, Matthews, Lake Park, Monroe, Kannapolis, Gastonia, Belmont, York, Harrisburg, and Fort Mill.

About Chinese
The Chinese language is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Because Chinese is considered to be a language family, with other languages such as Cantonese and Mandarin being considered independent languages in and of themselves, it is not often thought of in the Asian world as one unified language. But in fact, when all of the various forms of language in China are combined, the Chinese language is clearly the number one language in the world, with 1.176 billion people speaking it is China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and parts of the Philippines. Recently, Chinese has also become an important international language, due to the fact that China continues to become more and more of a political and economical force in the world.
While Chinese is not typically taught in the elementary or high school level in the United States, more and more colleges and universities are offering Chinese language courses, since political science and international business students now desire to know the language before beginning their careers. Students of Chinese must learn new and unfamiliar linguistic rules pertaining to vocabulary, syntax, grammar, word order, pronunciation, and expressions. Given the fact that very little similarities exist between the English language and Chinese, students can great benefit from working with a Chinese language tutor
