About Buffalo, NY
Though it is often thought of as being a rather small city, Buffalo, New York is actually the second largest city in the state of New York. Situated on Lake Erie and the head of the Niagara River, Buffalo acts as a kind of gateway city to both Canada and Niagara Falls. The history of Buffalo is quite rich: at the turn of the 20th century, it was the 8th largest city in America, serving Lake Erie as its terminus. It was also a major railroad hub for connecting Canada with the northeast and had a robust manufacturing identity, serving as the largest grain-milling producer as well as the largest steel-making city in the world. The opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, however, had a major impact of Buffalo’s sustainability, which accounts for its decline in population today.
People often refer to Buffalo as “The Queen City.” This refers to its rank in size within the State of New York, with the “king” of course being New York City. The city is still home to a diverse population of people, and a blend of various cultures still exists there. The city’s cuisine bears evidence to this, and includes Italian, Jewish, German, Polish, African American, Greek and American influences. The city also has two avidly supported professional sports teams, the Sabres ice hockey club and the Bills football team.
