With a population of 100,148 residents, the city of Billings is the largest city in the state of Montana. The city is nicknamed the “Magic City,” due to its rapid growth in population and economic statue since its incorporation as a modest railroad town in 1882. In particular, the city remains one of the fastest growing cities in the entire United States. As a result of its start as a railroad town, the city is named after Frederick H. Billings, the famed president of the Northern Pacific Railroad. In spite of its population size and density, Billings is located in a rather remote area of the country: it is the largest city by population in a 500 mile radius that includes Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.
