About Austin, TX
Most great cities in the United States have an official motto that accurately portrays the identity of its inhabitants. In Austin’s case, their motto is, “Keep Austin weird.” To be sure, Austin is by far the most artistic and eclectic city in Texas, and has fast become one of the cultural centers of the United States. While the city is well known for its commerce and industry, with a particular emphasis on technology (the city has been dubbed “Silicon Hills” in recent years due to its prowess in the technology sector), Austin is best known as “The Live Music Capital of the World.” The city is peppered with live music venues, bars, and nightclubs, all of which feature a diverse range of music from country to rock. The city is also home to South by Southwest, an annual music conference and showcase that has become the most followed and sought after, even above the famous CMJ music conference in New York City.
In spite of the fact that Austin is growing and expanding in size and importance year after year, Austinites have a sincere desire to “stay weird,” and one of the ways in which they try to buck the trends of American growth is by focusing on developing small businesses and steering away from encouraging large multi-national corporations into their town. As a result, this down-home, grass roots ideology filters down into the tight-knit communities and neighborhoods that comprise the city. Towns such as Sunset Valley, Del Valle, West Lake Hills, Jollyville, Hornsby Bend, Lakeway, Elgin, Pflugerville, Round Rock, and Webberville all capture the true essence of this one-of-a-kind Texan city.

About Belly Dance
The art of belly dancing has become a popular form of artistic expression and exercise in modernity. Practices mostly by women, it is often seen as a sexually empowering form of dance that celebrates the splendor of the female form. The traditional belly dancing costume, which is comprised of flowing, colorful, transparent fabrics, and an emphasis on the dancer’s exposed stomach and midriff, bolsters this notion. And, unlike other forms of dance, such as ballet or ballroom dancing, which often require a female dancer to be lithe and slender, a belly dancer’s physique calls for a more voluptuous build, with a slightly protruding “pot belly” being preferred.
Belly dancing is actually a western form of dancing that is adapted from middle eastern folk dancing, often referred to as “raqs sharqi,” which means “oriental dance.” It is believed that this style of dance originated in oriental culture, and many believe that it was meant to mimic or encourage childbirth (hence the emphasis on the dancer’s belly). When European became interested in the art-form, however, artists often depicted the dancers as part of Middle Eastern harems associated with the Ottoman Empire, which is where the sensual and sexualized themes of the dance come from. Regardless of one’s motivation for learning belly dancing, a belly dancing tutor or instructor will be able to team the specific forms and techniques associated with the art. Some specific techniques include the “pop and lock” shimmy, belly rolling, balancing propos, such as swords or canes, and dancing with chiffons and silk veils. There are several belly dancing styles as well, including the Turkish style, Egyptian style, Baladi style, Beledi style, Sha'abi style, and Sharqi style.
