About Blues Guitar
Blues guitar is a specific style of guitar playing that is associated with a wide variety of American musical genres. Some of the earliest blues guitar styles were developed by African-American blues guitarists in the 19th century, which were typically performed on acoustic guitars. As the Blues music genre began to grow throughout America, the style of Blues guitar playing became more and more varied. Today, guitarists who wish to learn the Blues have not one but many specific styles and variations that are considered part of blues guitar playing.
One of the earliest forms of blues guitar playing is slide guitar playing, wherein the guitarist tunes the guitar to an open guitar tuning and plays the string with a glass or metal slide, as opposed to using fingers to push down frets. This style was popularized by bluesman like Robert Johnson and Skip James. Other early forms of acoustic blues were personified by the playing of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississippi John Hurt, and Leadbelly among others.
With the advent of the electric guitar, one of the first genres to embrace the new technology was the blues. “Rhythm and Blues” thus became the electrified blues guitar style, with bluesman like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker becoming the pioneers of this style. Blues guitar also is closely related to rock and roll guitar playing, and many rock bands of the late 60s came to embrace the blues while expanding it through the use of electric guitars. Bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and Captain Beefheart among many others are well-known for their interpretation of blues guitar playing.
