About Roanoke, VA

Located on the Roanoke River, the city of Roanoke is home to 94,911 residents. Roanoke is in close proximity to the famed Blue Ridge Mountains. The city is considered to be the economic, cultural, and educational hub for its regional area, which also includes parts of West Virginia. The city of Roanoke dates back to 1852 when the town was first called Big Lick. That name came from a large formation of salt rock near the settlement. The town became known as Roanoke by 1884, named after the river that bisected the town. The belief is that “Roanoke” comes from the Algonquian tribe and means “money,” a kind of shell-like currency they used for trade and commerce.

The city of Roanoke has served as an important community since colonial times. The famous Great Wagon Road, which originated in Philadelphia, ended in modern day Roanoke, and was an important path for people looking to move west. The city began to expand economically with the arrival of the railroads, which helped to exploit nearby coal deposits in the Blue Ridge Mountain Range.

Today, Roanoke is appreciated to be an important cultural hub. It also has two colleges – Roanoke College and Hollins University. Virginia Tech is located nearby as well.
