About Newport News, VA
Located on the Virginia Peninsula where the state-stretching James River empties into the famed Chesapeake Bay, the coastal Virginian city of Newport News in an old, colonial city that comprises the Hampton Roads region of the state. Newport News dates back as early as 1634 as one of the original eight shires established by the British Empire and King Charles I. The area remained rather low profile until the late 1800s, when Newport News saw the expansion of the railroad, coal piers, and a large shipyard in its vicinity. It became an independent city in 1896.
The city now boasts a population of 180,150 residents. The location of nearby Fort Eustis, home of the U.S. Army Aviation Logistics School, gives the city a decidedly military-oriented economic focus. Many of the city’s residents work or are stationed at the fort, or they work at the Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding facility, which is a major supplier and shipbuilder for the U.S. Navy. The coal piers are still also a major economic factor and employer in Newport News, which are now owned by CSX Transportation, a major transportation corporation and a Fortune 500 company. L-3 Flight International Aviation, an aerospace technology developer, is also headquartered in the city.
Because Newport News comprises the Tidewater region of the country, residents there have a distinct identity that transcends even the typical southern persona. Residents of Newport News have their own idiosyncratic “Tidewater” accent and culture. The city has become increasingly popular as a tourist destination, given its quaint, charming coastal culture and picaresque location on the James River and Chesapeake Bay, respectively.
The city of Newport News in home to several old, colonial neighborhoods. Some of them include: Glendale, Hilton Village, Morrison, Newmarket, and Oyster Point. Surrounding cities and towns include: Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Hampton, Suffolk, Poquoson, Driver, Chuckatuck, Smithfield, and Rushmere.
