About Salt Lake City, UT

Situated on the Great Salt Lake in the state of Utah, the City of Salt Lake is the capital and most populous city in the state, with 178,858 residents. Sometimes called “S.L.C.,” the City of Salt Lake is one of the older cities in the western section of the United States. Brigham Young, a pioneer, prophet, and leader of the Mormon Church, established the city in 1847. Young and his Mormon followers fled the Midwest where their religion was being persecuted and settled Salt Lake City in order to practice their faith away from the social pressures of the east.

Nicknamed “The Crossroads of the West,” Salt Lake City grew from a sheltered Mormon village to a major U.S. city with a mining boom and the ensuing expansion of the first transcontinental railroad, which ran through the city of Salt Lake and made it a critical hub for the transportation of minerals and other goods, such as steel and oil. Major industrial companies such as Silver King Coalition Mines, Geneva Steel, and Bingham Canyon Mine all got their start in Salt Lake City. The city continued to expand and diversify its economic focus throughout the 20th century, and is now known as the industrial banking center of the entire United States. The city also employs people in the governmental, trade, transportation, utilities, and professional and business services sectors as well.

Salt Lake City is comprised of several important neighborhoods, including: Capitol Hill, Central City, Federal Heights, Rose Park, and Sugar House among others. Surrounding towns and cities include: Grantsville, Park City, Cottonwood Heights, Draper, Riverton, Sandy, South Jordan, Kearns, Centerville, Bountiful, Farmington, Woods Cross, Tooele, and Magna.
