About Fort Worth, TX
The Texan city of Fort Worth is a sprawling city, covering nearly 300 square miles. The population there continues to grow rapidly, and it now exceeds over 700,000 residents. The city was established in the mid 1800s as a true fort in order to contain the Native American populations in the region. Today, the fort-turned-city still remains in and around the picaresque foot of a bluff that overlooks the flowing Trinity River.
The city of Fort Worth saw little population growth, and, for a long time, it was little more than a small community surrounding an old fort. It wasn’t until the establishment of the Chisholm Trail, the trail that cuts across Texas where millions of cattle were driven north to market, that the city began to boom in economic growth and population. Today, the city still retains its western, frontier-styled heritage: unlike its ultra-modern counterpart and sister city, Dallas, Fort Worth’s architecture and façade is decidedly traditional, with many historical buildings and structures still intact.
In spite of its traditional vibe, the city of Fort Worth is in fact a thriving metropolis, featuring a strong economic and commercial district as well as an engaging tourist destination. Numerous large corporations are headquartered in “Cowtown,” including the retail giant Pier One Imports. Also, many tourists who make the rounds throughout the state of Texas make sure to visit Fort Worth, in spite of the fact that it is only the fifth-largest city in the state. This is owed to its western charm and attitude, which comes from the city’s proud and telling motto: “Where the West Begins.”
Fort Worth has several Districts, including the Historical District, the Cultural District, the Parks District, and Uptown/Trinity. Surrounding towns and cities include: Forest Hill, Halston City, River Oak, Hurst, Benbrook, Crowley, Burleson, Rendon, Mansfield, Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Irving.
