About El Paso, TX
The city of El Paso is a true testament to the grandiosity of the state of Texas. With a population of 609,000, it stands as the twenty-second largest city in the U.S. and is the seventh fastest growing nationwide. What is truly incredible is that, even with a robust, expanding population, El Paso is still only the sixth-largest city in the state of Texas. The city personifies the hot, arid climate and rugged landscape of the American southwest, combined with a lush valley fed by its bountiful river: the fresh Rio Grande divides the city from Ciudad Juarez, its Mexican counterpart, while the jagged Franklin Mountains cut into the city from the north, bisecting it into two distinct sections.
Most of the U.S. cities have a relatively short history compared to the cities of Europe, however evidence shows that El Paso has been home to communities of native people dating back even before Columbus founded the Americas. In the late 19th century, the city experienced a population boom with the onset of the gold rush and the move westward by American pioneers. These times brought forth a wealth of people into the city. It is this freewheeling, independent spirit that still drives the city of El Paso. Over seventy Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in El Paso and, because it is so close to the Mexican border, the city is a major entry and exit point into Mexico.
As mentioned earlier, the city is bisected into two halves, thanks to the Franklin Mountain range. The Downtown region at the southern base of the range unites these two halves. The neighborhoods and significant areas of the city include: Central El Paso, Coronado Hills, East El Paso, Franklin Mountains State Park, Kern Place, Mission Valley El Paso, Northwest El Paso, Sunset Heights, Tierra Del Este, Northeast El Paso, and Tigua. Some surrounding towns include: Juarez, Durango, Madero, Sunland Park, Puerto De Anapra, Santa Teresa, Fort Bliss, 6 De Enero, Fabens, San Elizario, Horizon City, and El Paraiso.
