About Knoxville, TN
The city of Knoxville is the third largest city by population in the state of Tennessee, with 173,890 residents. Founded in 1786, it is also the second oldest city in the state, behind only Nashville, which was founded in 1779. Named after Henry Knox, the first Secretary of War in the United States, the city actually served as Tennessee’s first capital until moving to Murfreesboro in 1819.
Knoxville is sometimes referred to as “The Marble City,” due to its large deposit of Tennesseean pink marble that was quarried from the area in the 20th century.
