About Tulsa, OK
Second only to Oklahoma City, Tulsa is one of the largest cities in the state of Oklahoma. Founded originally by the Creek Indians, the city has grown out from the foothills of the Ozark Mountains on the banks of the Arkansas River in a region known affectionately as the “Green Country.” When oil was discovered in the southwestern part of the United States, it was not a Texan city, but Tulsa that became known as the “Oil Capital of the World.” Tulsa was indeed the center of the oil industry in America for much of the 20th Century. The country’s reliance on Tulsa as an oil provider led to the development of the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, which holds the distinction of being the most navigable inland riverport that has access to international waterways. When locating Tulsa on a map, it’s remarkable to imagine that such an inland city could have distributed its major resource worldwide by sea.
When the oil-drilling industry in America began to wind down, the city of Tulsa experienced an economic malaise. Recent diversification efforts have been quite successful in revitalizing the city’s economy, however, and now the city plays host to a myriad of commercial sectors, such as telecommunications, energy, finance, aviation, and technology.
Tulsa is also considered to be the cultural center of Oklahoma, and contains two world-renowned art museums as well as a full-time opera house and ballet companies. It is also the birthplace of the “Western Swing” music genre and where Route 66 came into being. In 2005, it was selected as one of the most liveable cities, based n standard of living, job availability, and affordable real estate. The city also boasts an impressive array of architecture, especially among its historical landmarks, many of which bear the art demo aesthetic.
