About Oklahoma City, OK
Known as “The Big Friendly,” Oklahoma City possesses the friendly, salt-of-the-earth charm of the American Midwest. Originally settled in 1889, it started out as an essential pioneering city, considering it was established in the “unassigned lands” of the Oklahoma Land Run. Land runs like these were common during the expansion westward, and they simply involved a mad dash across the state, with pioneering homesteaders sprinting towards their own little piece of the American dream and staking out their land. Oklahoma City was founded by a group of 10,000 homesteaders just like these, settling what is now downtown Oklahoma City. These amazing men and women managed to set up a vast tent city in only one day. Ten years later, the population had doubled, and Oklahoma City was crowned the capital city of the state. The passion and exuberance for success and the realization of these settlers’ dreams still exists in the spirit of the city today.
Perhaps the most impressive addition to the city’s identity is the development of its cultural arts community. The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is an impressive facility, including various art exhibits, a film theatre, which shows rare and foreign art films, as well as the most comprehensive collection of Chihuly glass in the world. The city is also home to the art deco-styled Civic Center Music Hall and the Stage Center for the Performing Arts.
Oklahoma City features a diverse range of neighborhoods. Many of the inner city neighborhoods are older and stately, whereas the outlying neighborhoods are undergoing aggressive gentrification. Some of the city’s neighborhoods include: Bricktown, Deep Deuce, The Arts District, the 39th Street Enclave, The Paseo, Uptown, and Midtown. Surrounding towns and cities include: Edmond, Warr Acres, Midwest City, Choctaw, Moore, Newcastle, Norman, Del City, Mustang, Harrah, Little Axe, Newalis, Shawnee, and Tecumseh.
