The city of Dayton was founded in 1796 by a group of U.S. settlers and pioneers. The city was established a few years before Ohio was even admitted to the union as a state. The city saw its most significant economic boom during World War II, when Dayton became an industrial force for the war effort, helping to design and build the atomic bombs. This experience during World War II has carried over into recent years: Dayton has become well known as a city whose economic focuses include industrial, aerospace, and technological/engineering research among others.
