About Flint, MI

The city of Flint, Michigan is located on the Flint River, just 66 miles northwest of Detroit. It is the fifth largest city in the state of Michigan by population, with 124,943 residents. Known as “The Vehicle City” and “Buick City,” Flint, Michigan was home to several major automobile-manufacturing facilities, including a massive Buick facility that gave the city one of its nicknames. After an economic malaise in the town and the reduction of the automotive sector, Flint fell on difficult times. The city was thrust into the public spotlight, however, when documentary filmmaker Michael Moore made the famous film Roger and Me about the suffering of the residents in Flint and the loss of the automobile manufacturing trade.

In recent years, however, the city of Flint, Michigan has begun to make a rebound economically. The city has made significant progress is de-industrializing its economic base, and instead trying to attract a more diverse array of companies into the city. The city is also home to several colleges and universities, including: University of Michigan-Flint, Kettering University, formerly known as GMI (General Motors Institute), Baker College, and Mott Community College.

Some of the towns and cities that surround the city of Flint include: Grand Blanc, Burton, Flushing, Fenton, Lapeer, Davison, Goodrich, Atlas, Lennon, Durland, Gaines, Linden, and Byron.
