While perhaps not the largest or most influential city in the United States, the city of New Orleans is no doubt one of the nation’s most unique as well as one of the most world-famous cities. Founded in 1718 by the French Mississippi Company and populated early on by Franco-Arcadian settlers who migrated from the Province of Quebec in Canada, New Orleans stands as the capital of Louisiana, the most French-influenced state in the Union. Its French culture, combined with African and Creole customs, has blended over its long history to create a city culture unrivalled by any other in the world.

New Orleans is famous for many things. Its celebration of Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday” as it is translated, is taken from a common Roman Catholic tradition celebrated throughout the world where worshippers celebrate abundantly before the beginning of the holy season of Lent, which is marked by fasting and abstinence. The celebration of Mardi Gras encapsulates all of what the city of New Orleans is famous for: it highlights the city’s “Dixieland” music, which is perhaps the most primordial form of what it now known as “Jazz,” its spicy, flavourful Creole cuisine, and its reputation for partying and nightlife.

The city itself is located on the muddy Mississippi river and has been home to one of the busiest seaports in America. It is also in close proximity to Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Borgne, and the Gulf of Mexico. These three significant bodies of water contributed to the near-destruction of the city in August of 2005 when Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city and decimated its population, driving many of its inhabitants to leave the city and relocate to more inland communities. The culture and identity of New Orleans, however, is undying, and the core of its residents is working diligently to rebuild the city and return it to its greatness. In recent years, many national developers have bought up abandoned land in the city’s limits and are planning large-scale development of commercial, industrial, and residential projects, which will eventually help to bolster the city’s struggling economy.

The neighborhoods of New Orleans are known as “wards,” and include: the famous French Quarter, Central City, Uptown, Mid-City, Lakeview Area, Gentilly, and Bywater among others. Surrounding cities include: Chalmette, Violet, Belle Chasse, Estelle, Arabi, Verret, Marrero, Westwego, Kenner, River Ridge, Metairie, Gentilly, Laplace, and Destrehan.
