About Baton Rouge, LA
Known as one of the major Gulf ports of the south, the beautiful city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana is the second-largest city in the state and is located on the Mississippi River. Much like the city of New Orleans, Baton Rouge sits a bit below sea level and is thus protected by a series of levee systems as well as the Istrouma Bluff, which prevents flooding. In spite of its relatively small city population of 229,661 residents, the city is a major economic force in the southern United States. It is also an important cultural center for the preservation of the unique French-speaking Cajun culture that the state of Louisiana is known for.
Sometimes referred to as “The Red Stick” (the English translation of “baton rouge”), the city has an old, intriguing history. It was founded in 1699 after French explorer Sier d’Iberville came across a red cypress pole along the Mississippi River that was adorned with fish and animal carcasses. This pole served as a boundary line for two local Native American tribes. A settlement was established near here and called “le baton rouge” after the boundary stake.
Since that time, the city has functioned under seven different governing bodies: France, England, Spain, Louisiana, the Florida Republic, the Confederate States, and the United States, a surprising number. Much of the French influence in the city came as a result of Acadian settlers migrating down from Canada. This group of French-speaking settlers became known as “Cajuns.” The Cajun culture greatly influenced the city of Baton Rouge, perhaps even more than New Orleans. This is where the city’s nickname, "Authentic Louisiana at every turn," comes from.
Baton Rouge has several assets that make it an economic powerhouse in the region. Its inland port on the Mississippi River is the deepest one of its kind, allowing large ocean liners to access it. Products as varied as cars, grain, containers, and crude oil are all transferred in Baton Rouge. The petrochemical industry is the city’s largest economic focus, and it uses rail, pipeline, highway, and sea to distribute these products nationally and globally. The city is also the state capital and the parish seat, giving it a large governmental presence as well.

Surrounding cities and town include: Port Allen, Merrydale, Brownfields, Baker, Zachary, Denham Springs, Westminster, Oak Hills Place, Gardere, and Plaquemine.
