Literally meaning “of the Monks,” the city of Des Moines is located on the Des Moines River, or, “River of the Monks,” and is the largest city in the State of Iona as well as its capital. While the city population hovers near 200,000, the entire metropolitan areas of Des Moines tops out at over a half-million residents. The city was originally established as Fort Des Moines, much like many “fort” cities in the Midwest and west of America. Since its inception in 1851, the small fort town has grown into the most important city in the state of Iowa, becoming its capital in 1857.

Like many other cities located in the Midwest, Des Moines’ principal source of commerce lies in the insurance industry. The city is home to one Fortune 500 Company, the Principal Financial Group. It is also home to EMC Insurance Group, Allied Insurance, AmerUs Group, Holmes Murphy, and American Republic Insurance Company. Because of its particular focus on the insurance sector, Des Moines is sometimes called “The Hartford of the West,” since Hartford, Connecticut is also known well-known for its insurance sector.

The city of Des Moines is also known as a cultural hub for the Midwest as well. Broadway shows often perform in the city at the Civic Center, and the Des Moines Playhouse and the Temple for Performing Arts play host to a never-ending schedule of plays, musicals, comedy shows, and musical programs. The city also has a strong jazz and blues community as well as many music venues.
