About Fort Wayne, IN
Known as “The Summit City,” the city of Fort Wayne is Indiana’s second-largest city after Indianapolis. It currently has a population of 252,000 residents. Although not one of the largest city populations in the nation, the city is located in a region of the United States that contains nearly 17 percent of the total population in America. The city is named after U.S. Army General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, and was originally established both as a fort with a small surrounding town. After the economy of the town began to boom, due to its location near the Wabash and Erie Canal, the city of Fort Wayne was established. Large groups of Irish and German immigrants came to the city in the 1800s, leading to the city’s largest population growth.
Since the manufacturing and industrial identity of Fort Wayne declined in the 20th century, the commercial district of the city is now mainly concentrated on the insurance, manufacturing, and healthcare sectors. Once outside the city, the outlying metropolitan area is also a major contributor to the agricultural sector in America.
Recent efforts in Fort Wayne have been to refurbish and reclaim the downtown section of the city. Plans are in the works to construct a new baseball stadium, more parking, condominiums and housing, stores, and hotels. The city is known for its picaresque Midwestern charm, however. Sometimes referred to as “The City of Churches,” there are many Catholic and Lutheran churches within the city limits, due to the fact that Fort Wayne was home to large immigrant populations of Catholics and Lutherans coming from Ireland and Germany.
Neighborhoods in Fort Wayne include: Brentwood Park, Briargate, Cherry Hill, and Crestwood among others. Surrounding towns and cities include: New Haven, Garrett, Auburn, Waynedale, Nine Mile, Hessen Cassel, Maples, Arcola, Wallen, and Huntertown.
