About Springfield, IL

The city of Springfield is the state capital of Illinois, with a population of 116,482 residents. The city is located in the near center of the state on a flat plain. Originally, Springfield named Calhoun, after Senator John C. Calhoun, a popular senator from South Carolina in the early 1800s. When Calhoun fell out of political favor, the city was renamed as “Springfield.” In spite of the fact that it is not one of the larger cities in the state by size, economic prowess, or population, Springfield is well known within the state of Illinois as well as the Midwestern region it occupies as a major cultural hub. The city is known for its cuisine, music, and arts community, and holds the famous Carillon Festival annually, which highlights all of these particular specialties.

Historically speaking, the city of Springfield is most well known for the fact that Abraham Lincoln lived and served there as a senator. As a result, the governmental sector of the city has continued to remain strong. The government is by far the largest employer in the city. As a result of Lincoln’s legacy, tourism is also quite popular in the city as well.
